As a medical practice with deep roots in San Diego, our team loves to highlight other local businesses and organizations in the La Jolla/San Diego area. And, if you’ve met our top plastic surgeon, Dr. Katerina Gallus, you know she founded Restore SD Plastic Surgery after serving as a board certified plastic surgeon at the Naval Medical Center – San Diego, making her a proud Naval veteran. In honor of the 1.5 million+ men and women who serve in our nation’s military, we have compiled a list of our 5 favorite San Diego non-profits that support veterans and their families this month.
1. Foundation for Women Warriors
As a 100-year-old organization dedicated to honoring and empowering female veterans, the Foundation for Women Warriors seeks to enhance the personal and economic well-being of women veterans and their children. Another primary goal of the organization is to help meet the growing needs of military women who are transitioning to civilian life after serving their country; these women often face difficult physical, mental, and emotional challenges, which they must balance with raising a family. Foundation for Women Warriors helps ease this transition by addressing the top 4 needs of women veterans: education, employment, housing, and childcare.
2. Women Veterans Alliance
Founded in 2015, the Women Veterans Alliance is a woman- and disabled veteran-owned small business organization that compiles local and global networking groups, community events, and national conferences focused on women veterans. Specifically, the Women Veterans Alliance provides female vets with career, business, and mentorship opportunities to help this underrepresented group connect with one another and grow personally and professionally.
3. United Through Reading
As a non-profit committed to enhancing readership among veterans and their families, United Through Reading believes that the more our military families read, the stronger our nation will be. Founded in San Diego in 1989, the organization connects military families who are separated due to deployment or military assignment through the shared connection of reading together. Whether you care about veterans, their families, expanding literacy, or all of the above, United Through Reading should be at the top of your list of organizations to support.
4. The Rosie Network
Inspired by the “can-do” attitude of the female WWII icon Rose the Riveter, The Rosie Network is dedicated to increasing small business ownership among active-duty military, veterans, and military spouses. Veterans are increasingly turning to entrepreneurship as a means to support their families, give back to their communities, and fulfill the American dream, and The Rosie Network provides mentorship and other resources necessary to support their goals. Help veterans and their spouses achieve financial independence through business ownership by supporting this impactful non-profit.
5. Veterans Village of San Diego
Conveniently located across the street from the San Diego Veterans Affairs office, the Veterans Village of San Diego provides post-9/11 veterans and their families with confidential, high-quality behavioral healthcare services and local resources at low to no cost. Their clinical team assists with major life concerns ranging from unemployment and financial support to military transitioning and nutrition counseling, in addition to offering one-on-one therapy, couples therapy, child therapy, and other services. With an estimated 10-16% of our nation’s military struggling with mental health challenges, the Veterans Village of San Diego plays a critical role in ensuring that veterans in our San Diego community and beyond stay healthy, safe, and happy.
