Many women share a common concern– one of their breasts is bigger or smaller than the other. The difference is often minimal, but it can be so extreme that it interferes with finding a bra or swimsuit top that fits or leads to problems such as poor body image or low self-esteem.

If you are worried about the look of your breasts, then the good news is there are several things you can do to remedy the situation. Arranging a consult with board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Katerina Gallus to learn more about potential surgical solutions is a great first step. Breast asymmetry correction surgery incorporates several solutions to correct breast asymmetry to restore more equal breast shape and size.

Some women are understandably concerned about the cost of breast asymmetry correction surgery. The cost of the surgery depends on factors including the type of surgical solution and any additional procedures. After discussing your concerns and goals, the team at Restore SD Plastic Surgery can help shape the best surgical plan for you and share options for financing.

Breast Asymmetry Surgery Solutions

Asymmetrical breasts come in all shapes and sizes, but they generally lead to the same problems: having trouble finding bras that fit or feeling self-conscious about their breasts in revealing tops or bathing suits. Dr. Katerina Gallus is a surgeon skilled in breast asymmetry correction and uses several techniques to correct breast asymmetry, including breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, fat transfer augmentation, and nipple repositioning.

Breast Augmentation with Implants or Fat Transfer

The breast augmentation process involves increasing breast size and enhancing breast shape. Traditionally plastic surgeons use breast implants made of silicone or saline to achieve this effect. The implants can be different sizes to adjust for breast asymmetry. Another option is to fat graft the breasts to create symmetry. Volume can be added to even the breast shape and look with or without implants. The primary purpose of breast augmentation is to improve the natural proportions of breasts and create a more aesthetically pleasing and symmetrical breast profile. At Restore SD Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation surgery is designed around the individual needs of the patient, whether they hope to restore breast fullness, correct uneven breasts, or just improve confidence and self-esteem.

Nipple Repositioning

Concerns with nipple areolar positioning can be fixed through surgery. Women with uneven nipple placement can be worried about one nipple areolar complex being higher or lower than the other. This is often discussed in a consult when seeking correction for uneven breasts. Some women also seek Dr. Gallus for help with elongated or enlarged nipples or areolas and other nipple problems. Nipple reduction and correction of inverted nipples are two common nipple concerns that women seek surgical solutions. With nipple reduction the tissue may be naturally project more than a woman finds comfortable or it may be a result of breast feeding. With nipple inversion the nipples are withdrawn under the surface and lack protrusion. Dr. Gallus and the team at Restore SD can tailor the idea surgical solution to address your nipple concerns. This surgery can often be combined with other breast surgery or done separately under local anesthesia.

Breast Lift

Breast lift or mastopexy is another common breast-related plastic surgery. This breast enhancement procedure primarily helps change the shape of breasts. There are several reasons women turn to plastic surgery for breast lifts. The female body undergoes many changes over time, leading to a loss of firmness and youthful perkiness. These changes are caused by aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations. Breast lift surgery can offer several benefits. A breast lift involves removing excess skin and reshaping breast tissue to create a more ideal breast shape and reposition the breast tissue higher on the chest. However, please note that breast lifts do not change breast size. The surgery can make breasts appear slightly smaller or larger, but the goal is to maintain your bra size.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery consists of reducing the size of the breasts. Although not evident from the surgical name, reduction surgery also reshapes and repositions the breast. The nipple areolar complex is commonly reduced as well. Most women have some degree of uneven volume and in breast reduction surgery the amount of tissue removed to adjust for the difference to create even, lifted breasts. During consultation with Dr. Gallus, you can share your current bra size and the goal for your new smaller and more symmetrical breasts.

Recovering from Breast Asymmetry Correction Surgery

There are several surgery options for correcting breast problems. These procedures have varying recovery times and techniques. The recovery period varies depending on the surgery and your overall health going into the procedure. Here is a rundown of the general recovery process:

  1. You may experience some pain or discomfort during the first two or three days of recovery after breast surgery, whether you have a breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction. There may be some breast swelling and the breasts are sensitive to the touch. The team at Restore SD will review and provide medications to help manage pain and sensitivity.
  2. The pain and discomfort will start to fade over the next few days. The swelling goes down too. However, it is important that you continue to get lots of rest during this time. This can be the hardest part of recovery! You should also stay hydrated and avoid heavy lifting while recovering.
  3. The recovery process can be a bit faster for breast lift surgery. Women start to feel better and can slowly return to regular activity within a month or so.
  4. It is important to follow-up with Dr. Gallus and the Restore SD team to get regular checkups and allow us to guide you to a full recovery.

Conclusion

If you feel unhappy with your uneven breasts and it is causing you to feel self-conscious, you should consult a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your options for breast asymmetry correction surgery. Although specialty bras can provide a temporary solution, corrective surgery can provide a more permanent solution and achieve your goals of symmetry.
