What To Expect After Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation

You’ve taken time to do your homework and make sure that you know what you want for your body. You’re ready for breast augmentation surgery. You’ve been through your consultation to determine that you are a good candidate for the procedure. You know what cup size you would like to be. You’ve chosen your breast implants. There is only one more thing you need to know before you allow your plastic surgeon to enhance your breasts. You want to be prepared for what to expect after your breast augmentation surgery is over.

You Should Go Home on the Same Day

Breast augmentation surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Your surgeon will most likely use general anesthesia for your surgery. Your procedure may take an hour to an hour and a half. You may have drains put in place to eliminate excess fluid. These drains may be removed before you leave or you may need them for a few days after your procedure. Your surgeon will advise you on what is best for you. They will also provide you with the proper post-care instructions.

What to Expect When You Get Home

For the first full 24 hours after your procedure, you should rest. Physical activity is not advised following a breast augmentation. Pain levels will be mild to moderate. You can take a prescription medication from your surgeon or over-the-counter medicine. Bruising and swelling can be common. You should sleep with your back propped up on pillows. Do not sleep lying flat or on your sides.

Be Sure to Follow All Instructions for the Remainder of Your Recovery

For the next ten days, you will be given special exercises known as displacement exercises to ensure your implants settle into the most appealing position. Keep your activity levels to a minimum and take care of your incisions. You will need at least one week off. Within fourteen days, you should be able to perform light activities and exercises. Avoid anything that places a strain on your upper body. By three weeks, your exercise levels can increase. By six weeks, you should be able to get into a more rigorous exercise routine and you can enjoy the benefits of your breast augmentation.
