The partnership of Restore SD Plastic Surgery
Looking back, it seems like Dr. Gallus and Dr. Trent Douglas have known each other for a long time. Maybe that is because we have known each other since we were general surgery residents almost 20 years ago! Our partnership has developed over decades, beginning as a mutual alliance while toiling away as general surgery residents. Dr. Douglas was a year senior to Dr. Gallus and considered the person with the all the enviable experience – at least enough to predict what to expect in the next 6 months. Back then, while working 120 hours a week, anything beyond 6 months down the road might as well be an eternity away.
We both completed general surgery training and were fortunate to be selected for additional training sponsored by the Navy. Dr. Douglas left for Atlanta and Dr. Gallus set out for Indianapolis to undertake plastic surgery residencies. We hoped we would both return to San Diego as plastic surgeons but enjoyed training as a civilian for those brief years.
Don’t call it a comeback
We returned to Naval Medical Center San Diego as young, enthusiastic plastic surgeons ready to serve. We spent the next decade embracing the challenges of running a small department as well as the demands of cultivating war time skills during a time of conflict. Our families grew close – our spouses are also in the medical field and our children are around the same age. During the evacuations due to the fires of 2007 the Douglas and Gallus family lived together for a week – true merger. We supported each other’s families during multiple deployments to Afghanistan and humanitarian missions.
In 2012 both of us began to seriously contemplate our future beyond the Navy.
Dr. Douglas and Dr. Gallus both completed our educational commitments to the Navy around the same time. We had been working together for years now, each taking a turn at running at the department, and have similar styles of practice and commitment to patient care.
We decided in 2012, that we would start planning our dual practice, yet unnamed, to be established in the San Diego community that we consider our own. We traded business books, questioned fellow surgeons about the best practices and built our vision of Restore SD Plastic Surgery.
Now we are excited to begin the next chapter of our professional lives. We have thoughtfully created our space and are excited to establish a team that enjoys plastic surgery as much as we do. We look forward to bringing that excitement and our experience to Restore SD Plastic Surgery patients.
