Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Katerina Gallus of Restore SD Plastic Surgery in San Diego recently sat down with SDVoyager to discuss her role in and passion for the quickly-evolving field of plastic surgery.
Dr. Gallus began the intimate interview with a self-introduction and a brief look into her childhood. She explains how growing up in Cocoa Beach, Florida initially fostered an interest in marine biology, but that eventually led into medicine. She and her husband first came to San Diego on a military scholarship to complete her surgical training. She then served a dozen years as a board-certified Navy plastic surgeon, deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In 2018, Dr. Gallus launched her own private practice with the opening of RestoreSD Plastic Surgery—no small feat, as becoming a board certified plastic surgeon is a challenging path.
“There are few female surgeons and fewer female plastic surgeons,” Dr. Gallus explains. “This is slowly changing with increasing numbers of women in medical school and residency but we still have a way to go.”
Dr. Gallus goes on to describe how the combination of back-to-back deployments of her and her husband made it difficult to achieve the dream of having her own practice as well as raise a family. After becoming pregnant with her third child, Dr. Gallus made the choice to finish her time in the Navy and fully commit to a new chapter in her life. She recalls how difficult opening her own practice was, but also affirms that it has been incredibly rewarding.
“Physicians don’t have formal business training and there was a lot I had to learn. One of the reasons I love plastic surgery is that it is an evolving field – the technology is constantly changing and you need to stay curious to keep up. Learning new things related to running a business was fun for me despite all the obstacles. The satisfaction of creating a successful business is worth the hard work.”
Today, Dr. Gallus is enjoying the fruits of her labor—Restore SD is a full-service plastic surgery practice and one of the few female-owned aesthetic surgery practices in San Diego.
